How I landed a career in Digital Marketing

The only limits to the possibilities in your life tomorrow are the buts you use today.”

Les Brown

After finishing my bachelors in Electronics, as a graduate, I was confused and clueless as to what lies ahead and how would I go about it. So like every other engineering graduate, I took a job in Infosys as a software developer (I know :(!). Although I loved being away from home (Worked from Mysore, Karnataka and originally from Delhi), I made peace with the decision I had taken. Continuing with the on-job training which was six months long and then working on an actual project I always was in two minds about changing my field or the direction of my life.

Looking at my hopelessness in my current job situation, I got an opportunity to work as a Market Research Analyst. Now, this was a refreshing change and I needed to get my work done. Thanks to Google, I went through hours exploring and researching about marketing, advertising, sales and all the related streams. I came across Digital Advertising as one of buzz words during the time.

The idea of making it into advertising/ digital marketing required studying, planning and was time-consuming, to begin with. Thinking back I learnt it all on the web, because of all free information accessible. Some of the contents I looked at was:

  • Google Ads: A tool used my small enterprises for advertising on Google.
  • Hubspot: Initial introduction to Marketing and in-depth knowledge of marketing funnels, consumer journey, Inbound and Outbound Marketing.
  • Facebook Blueprint: This where I learnt about Social Media Advertising

During this time, out of nowhere, I wasn’t in every case certain about myself or my abilities, and this was truly humbling.

I tried to remind myself that it’s not easy to learn something new and that I wasn’t the best of the best on day one of my first jobs, either. I also sought out a few people in my new company I could rely on for honest feedback and helpful advice. Finding these mentors and support systems is crucial, and it will make it much easier for you to grow and to learn to trust your instincts in a new environment.

A career revival as I call it requires significant investment, tenacity, and a ton of learning new things. In any case, take it from me: When you’ve found that new job that you love and are working toward that new career—it’s 100% worth it, despite all the trouble.
